PBR - Brendan Norton and Marc Schoch each collected three hits to propel La Salle past Lafayette 11-2 on Tuesday in a first round Liberty Bell Classic contest in Easton.

The Explorers had a 4-1 lead before exploding for seven runs over the final three frames.

Alex Farina took the loss, allowing two earned runs over four innings. He struck out two.

Joe Bennie hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the eighth for the Explorers.

La Salle will face Penn next Tuesday in a semifinal contest of the Liberty Bell Classic.

Zebrack drives in seven, lifts Penn past 'Nova

PBR - Greg Zebrack collected a career-high seven RBIs and finished a single shy of a cycle, leading Penn past Villanova 11-4 on Tuesday at Meiklejohn Stadium in an opening round contest of the Liberty Bell Classic.

The Quakers jumped ahead with three runs in the first inning and two in the second and never looked back, chasing Wildcats' starter Max Almonte after three innings.

Brandon Engelhardt and Austin Bossart each collected a pair of hits in the winning effort.

Trailing 7-0, Villanova put together a pair of runs in the fifth, but Penn answered back with three more runs in the bottom of the frame to ultimately put the game out of reach.

Tyler Sciacca finished 2-for-4 for the Wildcats, while Marlon Calbi collected a pair of RBIs.

The victory allows Penn to advance and face La Salle in the Liberty Classic next week with the winner moving on to the championship contest at Citizens Bank Park in mid-April.

Delaware blanks Lehigh to advance in Liberty Bell Classic

PBR - Danny Gato tossed six shutout innings and struck out four to lead Delaware past Lehigh 5-0 on Tuesday in a Liberty Bell Classic first round contest in Bethlehem.

Gato scattered three hits and walked none in the winning effort.

Leading 2-0, the Blue Hens broke the game open with a three run fifth.

Six different players recorded a hit for Delaware.

“We respect Delaware, they are great team, but everything they got early in the game was given to them by us with walks and errors,” said Lehigh head coach Sean Leary. “It was still only a 2-0 game, but we were a little frustrated that we gave them more opportunities. We just need to get back to the drawing board a little bit. Guys are pressing and we just need to make some of our own breaks.”

Lehigh had an opportunity to answer in the eighth, but failed to capitalize on a bases loaded situation with no outs.

Colin Gotzon took the loss, walking four and surrendering a run in 1 2/3 innings.

Kratochwill's bat leads Hawks past Owls to open Liberty Bell Classic

PBR - Kevin Kratochwill finished with three hits, including knocking in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as Saint Joseph's defeated Temple 4-1 on Tuesday in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic at Skip Wilson Field in Ambler.

After the Hawks (7-18) got on the board early, Owls' catcher Matt Elko tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly. After that, Temple (10-15) had a hit in each of the three final frames, but ultimately stranded two runners and failed to score another run.

Kratochwill went 3-for-5 on the afternoon, improving his batting average to .357. The sophomore left fielder also leads the Hawks in runs scored with 11.

On the mound, the Owls sent Eric Peterson out for his first collegiate start, and the freshman pitched well, hurling six innings while allowing an unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts in the no-decision.

Daniel Thorpe was awarded his first win of the season after pitching four scoreless inning in the start for the Hawks.

With the win, Saint Joseph's now has three straight victories as they host Rhode Island in a three-game set starting Friday while Temple heads up the Garden State Parkway for two of three straight with Monmouth.

Podsednik hits walk-off as Lee glides over Pirates

PBR- Scott Podsednik hit a walk-off homerun to lead the Phillies past the Pirates 5-4. Cliff Lee led the charge, pitching six scoreless innings.

Lee was in mid-season form, scattering three hits and striking out three. The Phillies held the Pirates scoreless until Antonio Bastardo gave up three runs in the eighth before being relieved by Michael Stutes, who gave up one run to tie the game 4-4. In the ninth, Jonathan Paplebon got the win by holding the Pirates scoreless until Podsednik’s walk-off homerun in the bottom of the ninth.

Pete Orr went 2-for-4 on the day, while Jim Thome continued to heat up, scoring a run and doubling in a run. Shane Victorino doubled leading off the bottom of the first to begin a two run inning to get the Philadelphia offense moving. Miguel Abreu stole two bases, swiping second and third off of Joel Hanrahan.

With both Ryan Howard and Chase Utley nursing injuries, the emergence of Pete Orr and reemergence of Jim Thome can be the spark the Phillies need entering the regular season.

Up next, the Phillies will be taking on the Twins tomorrow in Fort Myers. Vance Worley is set to take the rubber against Minnesota southpaw Francisco Liriano.

Blanton with shaky start, bats silent as Phils fall to Red Sox

PBR - Joe Blanton allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings against Boston while the offense managed only three hits as the Red Sox shutout the Phillies 6-0 on Monday at Bright House Field in Clearwater.

Phillies Pitching: Blanton had an up-and-down outing against the Red Sox offense, striking out five batters and looking sharp with a nice breaking ball at times. But, he also allowed two home runs to Dustin Pedroia and Cody Ross in the loss ... Reliever Chad Qualls pitched a scoreless seventh inning, putting down the side in order and notching a strikeout ... Hector Neris pitched an impressive inning in relief as well, striking out two after coming in for Blanton.

Phillies Offense: The offense was flat, totaling just three hits and only four baserunners overall in the game ... John Mayberry went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts against Boston starter Jon Lester (7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 10 K), dropping his average to .206 ... Freddy Galvis was 1-for-3 with a double in the losing effort.

Let's Review: In yesterday's game against the Orioles, Jim Thome was back playing at first base for five innings. Though he didn't have any balls hit his way in the field, he looked comfortable at his old spot on the diamond. At the plate, he crushed a two-run double and went 2-for-4 for the day. Thome was out of the lineup against the Red Sox, but you can expect him to play some at first base early in the season with Ryan Howard on the disabled list.

On Deck: The Phillies take on the Pirates tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. ET at Bright House Field. Cliff Lee is expected to take the mound for the start.

Halladay appears ready for Opening Day, Phils tie Orioles

PBR - Roy Halladay scattered seven hits, two runs, two walks and struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings Sunday in a 3-3, 10-inning tie with the Orioles at Bright House Field in Clearwater.

Phillies Pitching: Halladay looked as if he were in mid-season form, settling down after surrendering a two-run home run in the second inning ... Jonathan Papelbon tossed a scoreless inning and Antonio Bastardo notched a pair of strikeouts ... Jose Contreras struggled in an inning of work, allowing a run on a pair of hits.

Phillies Offense: Jim Thome finished 1-for-3 and collected a pair of RBIs on a double in the second inning ... Carlos Ruiz went 2-for-4 and increased his spring batting average to .484 ... Freddy Galvis added three hits in the winning effort.

Let's Review:  Prior to today's contest Chase Utley addressed the media regarding the condition of his knees. He admits he won't be ready for Opening Day, but claims he will contribute this season. He's begun a new exercise regimen and believes he can avoid surgery. "I'm very optimistic this is going to turn out well. But again, it's going to take a little time and I have to do this right. I think it's important, not only for this year, but for the rest of my career. I'm 33 years old. I know some people think that's old, but I still feel like I have a lot of baseball left in me."

On Deck: The Phillies host the Boston Red Sox at 1:05 p.m. ET on Monday at Bright House Field. Joe Blanton is expected to start.

Friday, March 23, 2012

Worley settles down, but Phils falter to Yankees

PBR - Vance Worley surrendered three runs in the first inning before settling in to strike out seven in six innings, but the Yankees downed the Phillies 6-3 on Friday at Bright House Field.

Phillies Pitching: Worley walked one and his ERA for the spring stands at 2.81 ... Jonathan Papelbon hurled a scoreless inning in relief, striking out two ... David Herndon surrendered a pair of hits and one run.

Phillies Offense: Laynce Nix went 0-for-3, dropping his spring batting average to .185 ... Erik Kratz hit his second homer of the spring in the eighth inning ... The Phillies finished 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight.

Let's Review: Roy Halladay was named Opening Day starter for the Phils, while Cole Hamels will start the home opener. Joe Blanton may not start a contest until mid-April, simply because of how the schedule has off days built in.

On Deck: The Phillies travel to Fort Myers to face the Red Sox with a 1:35 p.m. start. Cole Hamels is scheduled to start.

A landmark day for those interested in baseball history

PBR - Baseball statistics can never tell the whole story, yet numbers can often act as figures of historical relevance, placing context around a specific player, team, league or feat.

Historians have often struggled researching the Negro Leagues. Most people affiliated with the various clubs have passed on, making interviews nearly impossible. Newspaper coverage of the leagues was hit-or-miss and box scores are often difficult to decipher, littered with misspellings and inaccuracies.

Phil Cockrell - Pitcher, Hilldale
Have you ever wanted to find information about the Hilldale Daisies and their historical 1925 season and Negro League championship? Good luck. You can pool information together from various sources, but the time commitment often is a deal-breaker. Box scores are held hostage in educational databases and on microfilm, leaving those without access out of luck.

The situation, however, appears to be changing.

Thanks to the tireless work of dozens of individuals affiliated with "The Negro Leagues Researchers and Authors Group," statistics on Negro League players are now available through www.baseball-reference.com.

Major League Baseball provided the Hall of Fame with a $250,000 grant in July 2000 in order to comprehensively examine the history of African Americans in Baseball, from 1860-1960. This process meant pulling data from various sources and piecing together team and player statistics.

"The data that forms the basis of these statistics is the result of years of tireless research by a dedicated team of historians," said Jeff Idelson, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. "We are so proud to have been able to facilitate this research, and equally pleased that our partner, baseball-reference.com, is able to make this information available to the public. This history that once was lost is now alive to help tell the story of the great African-American baseball heroes of the early 20th Century."

In total, researchers plowed through more than 3,000 day-by-day accounts in nearly 375 different newspapers from across the country. The study included sanctioned league game box scores from almost 100 percent of games played in the 1920s, in excess of 90 percent of the box scores from games played in the 1930s and box scores from 50-70 percent of games played in the 1940s and 50s.

Leagues and clubs rarely kept official statistics, meaning nearly everything had to be tabulated by hand.

Thanks to the work of the individuals who worked on this project, writers and researchers like myself have even more information to analyze and report.

Ideally, the cycle of information sharing will forever continue.

Sciacca collects four hits but Wildcats fall to Quakers

PBR - Spencer Branigan collected two hits, including an RBI-double in the eighth, to lead Penn past Villanova 6-3 on Wednesday at Plymouth Meeting.

The Quakers bounced back from an early 2-0 deficit and were able to mitigate the Wildcats offense in the late innings to hold on for the win. Connor Cuff picked up his first collegiate win and tossed the final four innings, striking out eight.

Derek Vigoa improved his batting average to .381 with a pair of hits in the winning effort.

Tyler Sciacca led the Wildcats with four hits.

The two teams combined to leave 22 runners on base.

Penn hosts Lafayette for a double-header on Saturday, while Villanova opens the Big East portion of their schedule with a series at home against St. John's.

Owls bounce back from early deficit, trump Explorers

PBR - Matt Elko's two-run RBI-double highlighted a four run sixth inning as Temple defeated La Salle 6-3 on Wednesday at Hank DeVincent Field.

With the win Temple has won seven of nine entering Friday's A-10 contest against St. Louis. La Salle will open the A-10 portion of their schedule Friday at George Washington.

Halladay tosses a gem as Phils down Orioles

PBR - Roy Halladay hurled six strong innings, allowing one run and limiting Baltimore to three hits as the Phillies beat the Orioles 4-1 on Tuesday at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.

Phillies Pitching: Halladay looked like his old self and turned in his best outing of the spring. He retired seven of the last eight he faced and struck out five ... Jonathan Papelbon tossed a scoreless inning in relief, surrendering a walk ... Michael Stutes and David Herndon each pitched a scoreless inning and combined for three strikeouts.

Phillies Offense: The bats exploded for 15 hits with Hunter Pence, Ty Wigginton, and Carlos Ruiz collecting two each ... Erik Kratz hit a solo homer in the ninth, his first of the spring ... Freddy Galvis finished 1-for-5 with an RBI-triple.

Let's Review: The injury bug continues to sting the Phillies. A day after Chase Utley's departure from camp with knee issues, infielder Michael Martinez broke a bone in his right foot after being hit a pitch. He was in a walking boot after the contest, but he's going to miss significant time - meaning Pete Orr and Hector Luna suddenly have a better shot of breaking camp with the club.

On Deck: The Phillies are off on Wednesday for the only time this spring. Action resumes Thursday when Cliff Lee faces the Blue Jays in Dunedin. Chad Qualls and Jose Contreras are also scheduled to pitch.

Klem's RBI-single in tenth lifts Explorers past Wildcats

PBR - Dan Klem collected three hits, including the game-winner in the tenth inning to lift La Salle past Villanova 5-4 on Tuesday at Hank DeVincent Field.

The Explorers carried a one run lead into the ninth before Villanova's Matt Fleishman tagged an RBI-double off the fence in left to tie the contest.

Marc Schoch scored the winning run after reaching on a walk and advancing on another pair of free passes.

Klem's single shot through the left side, allowing Schoch to score easily.

The win marked the fourth straight contest the Explorers have won in walk-off fashion.

Caolan Ronan picked up the win with a scoreless tenth.

La Salle hosts Temple on Wednesday, while Villanova welcomes Penn.

Utley leaves Clearwater to visit specialist

PBR - Chase Utley left camp on Monday to visit a specialist due to chronic soreness in both of his knees.

Utley has yet to appear in a contest this spring and now his odds of opening the season without a trip to the disabled list appear slim.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. released the following statement Monday morning: “Chase's rehab process has come to a bit of a plateau. He has made some strides but not enough to take the field. He is headed out of town for a few days to be evaluated by a specialist that has helped athletes overcome his issue. We anticipate that this trip will allow him to build on what he has already done with Scott Sheridan in order to get over the hump. He wants more than anything to be on the field with his teammates and we believe that this is a step in that direction.”

Amaro said he expects Utley to be back in camp by early next week.

The 33-year-old battled knee ailments throughout the 2011 season and played in 103 games, hitting a career-low .259 with 11 home runs and 44 RBIs.

Utley had been participating in drills early in camp, but the soreness progressively got worse and forced him to scale back his workouts.

In the meantime, rookie Freddy Galvis appears poised to inherit the starting job at second base until Utley returns. Known for his defensive abilities Galvis has impressed this spring at the plate, hitting .278 with a home run and eight RBIs.

Halladay fails to get through three as Twins down Phils

PBR - Roy Halladay was unable to pitch out of the third inning, surrendering five runs on seven hits as the Twins trumped the Phillies 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon in Clearwater.

Phillies Pitching: Halladay has yet to find his groove this spring and now has a 10.57 ERA over three starts. Four of the today's five runs came off a pair of homers ... Jonathan Papelbon tossed a scoreless inning and Michael Stutes contributed two of his own ... Jake Diekman struck out the side in his one inning of work.

Phillies Offense: Placido Polanco finished 2-for-4 with an RBI-double ... John Mayberry Jr. finished 1-for-2 and raised his average to .214 ... Carlos Ruiz went 2-for-2 in the losing effort.

Let's Review: Prior to Wednesday's contest nine players were cut from the spring roster ... righthanders Dave Bush, Austin Hyatt, B.J. Rosenberg and lefthander Pat Misch were reassigned to minor-league camp. Infielders Harold Garcia and Cesar Hernandez, outfielder Tyson Gillies, catcher Sebastian Valle and righthander J.C. Ramirez were optioned to minor-league camp.

On Deck: The Phillies have split-squad games Thursday. Part of the club will host the Braves at 1:05 p.m.at Bright House Field, while the other portion heads to Port Charlotte, where they will play the Rays at 1:05 p.m. Joel Pineiro will start in Port Charlotte, while Joe Blanton will start in Clearwater.

Errors cost Saint Joseph's in extras, fall to Villanova

PBR - A pair of throwing errors allowed Villanova the opportunity to push across four runs in the 10th inning on Tuesday afternoon to defeat Saint Joseph's 10-7 at Maguire Campus Field.

Both errors were made by pitcher Kevin Burum on bunt plays. Burum tossed two innings, allowing four runs, none earned, and was saddled with the loss.

An anemic Hawks' offense exploded for 15 hits on the day with Greg Kumpel, Kevin Kratochwill and Stefan Kancylarz combining for 11 of those hits.

Matt Fleishman hit a solo shot for the Wildcats while Tyler Sciacca and Connor Jones each collected three hits.

Sciacca opened the 10th with a bunt attempt and ultimately reached second on Burum's error. Paul Rambaud followed with a bunt attempt of his own and he too reached second on a throwing error, allowing Sciacca to score. Three straight singles scored two more runs to ultimately give the Wildcats the win.

Trailing  6-5 in the eighth, Kancylarz's RBI-single scored Lansing Veeder who reached earlier in the frame on a single and a stolen base.

The win improved Villanova's record to 10-6 on the season and dropped Saint Joseph's to 3-13.

Temple cuts huge deficit but falls short late

PBR - Joe Bennie collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead La Salle past Temple 9-7 Tuesday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field in Ambler.

The Explorers (7-8) pounced on the Owls (5-10) early, opening an 8-0 deficit through the first three innings. Owls' starter Dan Moller failed to finish the third frame, surrendering six runs on five hits and three walks.

Temple went on to score seven unanswered runs in the middle innings but it ultimately proved to be too little.

Steve Nikorak finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the losing effort. He's now reached base safely in every contest this season for Temple. Jordan Queja added three hits.

George Smith Jr. hit a solo homer for the Explorers in the final frame, extending his hit streak to nine games.

Pat Christensen tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings to notch the save, bringing him within one of the all-time La Salle record.

Eric Peterson did well for the Owls out of the bullpen, surrendering three hits and a run over six innings.

The Owls are back in action Wednesday at Penn while the Explorers host Buffalo on Friday.

Phillies Offense: Hector Luna and Jimmy Rollins each hit solo homers to pace the Phils' offense ... Domonic Brown hit a triple his only at bat, marking his first hit since returning from an injured thumb.

Let's Review: The win brought the Phillies' record to 5-5-1 on the spring ... Jim Thome played four innings in a Minor League Spring Training contest on Monday, marking the first time he's seen action in the field since 2007.

On Deck: The Phillies travel to Kissimmee tomorrow to face the Astros at 1:05 p.m. Cole Hamels is expected to start.  Dave Bush, Brian Sanches and Raul Valdes are also scheduled to pitch.

Voiro named Review's Big 5 Pitcher of the Week

PBR - Vince Voiro is the Review's Big 5 Pitcher of the Week.

The Penn senior hurled a complete game against Northeastern last week in a 3-2 win for the Quakers. He surrendered six hits and walked one while striking out seven. The win dropped his ERA to 1.93 on the season.

The Cherry Hill native tossed five complete games last year and is listed on the Review's Player of the Year Watch List for 2012.

Penn (3-5) opens the home portion of their campaign when Temple (5-9) visits Meiklejohn Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Digging deeper into some statistics, Scott Elarton's WHIP through six innings is 0.17 and opponents are hitting just .053 against him. He also has five strikeouts.

On Deck: The Phillies travel to Brandenton tomorrow to face the Pirates at 1:05 p.m. Vance Worley is expected to start. Relievers David Herndon and Antonio Bastardo also are scheduled to pitch.

Blanton and Elarton pitch well, but offense sputters

PBR - Chris Davis hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and that proved to be the difference as the Orioles shutout the Phillies 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Clearwater.

Phillies Pitching: Joe Blanton looked solid in his second spring performance, tossing three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. He surrendered four hits and walked one ... Scott Elarton gave up the solo shot to Davis in the fourth, but settled down hurled four innings, striking out four with the homer being his lone hit allowed.

Phillies Offense: John Mayberry Jr. went 0-for-3 and his spring average fell to .211 ... Shane Victorino hit a double in the first and finished 1-for-3.

Let's Review: Blanton admitted afterward that the Orioles were jumping on fastballs early in the count so he altered his strategy and relied heavily on his changeup and it paid off ... Davis's homer was Baltimore's first of the spring.

On Deck: The Phillies have split-squad games on Sunday. Cliff Lee will face the Tigers in Clearwater while Kyle Kendrick will start against the Yankees in Tampa. Both games are scheduled for 1:05 p.m.

Let's Review: Halladay surrendered both homers to Eric Patterson, a journeyman that is unlikely to break camp with the Tigers ... “I feel like everything is going good,” Halladay said afterwards. “I have just been inconsistent so far. I only made two mistakes and they were to the same guy. I feel like I have a long way to go, but I am not concerned.”

On Deck: The Phillies host the Orioles on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. with Joe Blanton slatted for the start.

Opinion: Brookover's recent work is discouraging on several levels

PBR - I'll be the first to admit I'm not a fan of numbers, but I comprehend their importance in today's baseball landscape. I've embraced the notion that advanced mathematics is becoming increasingly intertwined with the culture of American sport.

I also understand the concept of success and how it hinges on adaptability, so after reading Bob Brookover's latest article on the Phillies and their use of sabermetrics I could not help but feel a bit discouraged.

Brookover, a talented scribe that I admire, knocked sabermetrics as nothing more than strange acronyms and 'convoluted equations.'
"The theory of great pitching winning games is as old as Abner Doubleday, and KISS - keep it simple, stupid - is still the most sensible acronym in all walks of life." Bob Brookover - 3/2/2012.
I'm not a believer in Darwinism but I've always appreciated the concept of 'survival of the fittest.'

I began studying sabermetrics because I knew other baseball writers were incorporating advanced mathematical findings into their work. I could have easily taken Brookover's stance and poked fun at the notion of analytics in baseball but what would I have gained?

Ignoring analytics would have left me with less information and insight than my competitors, thus weakining my ability to analyze and report. I couldn't let that happen.

I'm a journalist and we're taught to be resourceful, so why any writer would discard information that digs beyond the surface is beyond me.
The same argument can also be made against Ruben Amaro Jr. and the Phillies.
"There are times when I think maybe we should use it some more, but, frankly, I have a great deal of confidence in the people that we have hired to help us make some of the scouting and personnel decisions. I err on that side probably because I believe in our people." Ruben Amaro Jr. - 3/2/2012
The fact that an organization has a strong scouting staff does not inherently diminish the importance of advanced analytics. There is no reason the two have to be mutually exclusive.

Worley bounced around, Astros trounce Phils

PBR -  The Astros jumped on Vance Worley for five hits in two innings and set the tone early en route to a 10-3 win over the Phillies in Clearwater on Wednesday afternoon.

Pat Misch and Dontrelle Willis were also knocked around, allowing a combined eight runs on eight hits over 2 2/3 innings ... Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless fifth and struck out two.

Phillies Offense: Lou Montanez collected a pair of RBI with a double in the eighth ... Hector Luna added a solo shot in the ninth ... Jim Thome finished 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts.

Let's Review: Willis said after Wednesday's contest that he felt soreness in his left arm, although he does not believe it is anything serious. He's likely out of action until early next week ... Placido Polanco is expected to start on Thursday ... Jim Thome will see his first action at first base this spring in a Minor League Spring Training game on Monday.

On Deck: The Phillies host the Pirates on Thursday at 1:05 p.m. Cole Hamels is scheduled to start, followed by Dave Bush, Antonio Bastardo, David Purcey and Phillippe Aumont.

Christensen and Bennie take weekly honors

PBR - Joe Bennie and Pat Christensen have been named the Review's Player and Pitcher of the Week.

The two played a significant role last week in leading La Salle to three victories and retaining the No. 2 spot in our weekly Big 5 Poll.

Bennie finished the week 8-for-17 with three homers and seven RBI, including a game-winner vs. North Carolina A&T on Sunday. He also appears in the top 5 in each of the three categories (HEQ, OA and BR) on the Review's Big 5 Offensive Leaderboard.

Christensen hurled four scoreless innings and recorded a win and a save in two appearances. He allowed just one hit and struck out seven.

Six-run inning lifts Phils past Yanks, 9-3

PBR - Hector Luna's three-run double highlighted a six-run sixth inning on Monday as the Phillies defeated the Yankees in Clearwater 9-3.

Phillies Pitching: Back from a right-elbow injury that cost him much of last season, Joe Blanton hurled two innings and surrendered a pair of hits while notching a strikeout ... Scott Elarton, who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2008, tossed two scoreless innings of his own without allowing a hit ... David Herndon gave up three hits in two scoreless innings.

Phillies Offense: Michael Martinez hit a two-run homer in his only at-bat of the day ... Jim Thome and Placido Polanco each finished 2-for-3 with Polanco picking up an RBI ... Jimmy Rollins collected a pair of hits in the win.

Let's Review: Carlos Ruiz was again left off the lineup card as Brian Schneider was given his first start of the spring. Charlie Manuel admits he's simply trying to give Ruiz some rest before ratcheting up his innings behind the plate ... Manuel said after Monday's contest that it may be another few days before Chase Utley sees his first action of the spring. Utley is still feeling discomfort in his chronically injured right knee.

Sabermetrics: Freddy Galvis still has some work to do with the bat

PBR - Freddy Galvis is no stranger to top prospect lists, but his stellar glove often has been overshadowed by his struggles at the plate.

The 22-year-old shortstop pieced together a respectable campaign in 2011 as he spent time at Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley, but it's quite evident he needs to drastically improve his offensive skills if he expects to make an eventual impact in Philadelphia.

The chart below lists several offensive metrics and shows how Galvis has improved since 2009.

  • OA or Offensive Average = (TB+BB+SB)/(AB+BB)
  • wOBA or Weighted On Base Average = (.69*BB = .72*HBP + .89*1B +1.26*2B + 1.60*3B + 2.08*HR + .25*SB - .50*CS)/PA
  • OPS or On Base Plus Slugging = OBP+SLG
  • EYE = BB/K
  • BABIP or Batting Average on Balls in Play = (H-HR)/(AB-K-HR+SF)

You can see a noticeable improvement in each of the five metrics, however, it's possible the 2011 figures may be skewed somewhat by Galvis's high BABIP.  The average BABIP should fall somewhere between .290 and .310, anything outside those parameters is likely cause for further analysis.

Faster players often tend to have higher BABIP's as they can beat out infield hits. Galvis does have some speed so that certainly contributed to the increase. Digging deeper, I searched for contact-type statistics (i.e, fly ball, line drive, etc.) but couldn't find figures for the 2011 minor league season, so I instead looked at his Isolated Power and compared it to his previous two seasons and noticed his 2011 ISO of .114 was approximately 32% higher than the .078 ISO he posted in 2010.

ISO is a statistic that measures raw power by subtracting batting average from slugging percentage. The result is how many extra bases a player averages at bat. The higher ISO forces me to believe Galvis was making better contact in 2011 than ever before. I also examined his Contract Rate (AB-K)/AB) and noticed it was slightly better in '11 than '10 (.842 vs..823.) Both of these figures, in addition to his speed, may compensate rightfully for his '11 BABIP.

Understanding 2011 was an improvement on his career offensive numbers, it still looks rather lackluster when you compute it to major league equivalences - a .236 average with six homers and 31 RBIs, coupled with a .316 SLG and a .373 OA. The most disturbing number, however, is his projected EYE of .237. [MLE Calculator]

There is no doubt Galvis is improving offensively and he still has a strong chance at becoming a regular at the major league level, but his offensive skills have to continue trending upward if he hopes to become a difference maker with anything more than his glove.

Halladay in form, but defense falters as Yanks drop Phils

PBR - Alex Rodriguez finished 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Yankees past the Phillies 7-4 on Sunday at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla.

Phillies Pitching: Roy Halladay pitched a solid two innings, surrendering two hits and one run while striking out three. Joel Pineiro struggled, allowing three runs on three hits and walk over two innings. Antonio Bastardo, David Purcey and Joe Savery each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.

Phillies Offense: For the second straight day Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer in the opening frame to give the Phillies an early lead ... Freddy Galvis hit a ball that was up in the zone down the right field line for an RBI-double in the sixth to bring the Phils to within a run at 4-3 ... Domonic Brown also finished the contest 2-for-4 with a triple.

Phillies Defense: Michael Martinez bobbled a likely double-play ball in the fourth and then let a grounder buckle his knees with two outs later in the frame, letting Alex Rodriguez crack an RBI-double to left field to give the Yanks a 4-2 lead ... Galvis made a superb play in the fifth on a Francisco Cervelli grounder to his right where he was forced to throw across his body - remember, fielding has never been an issue for Galvis, it's his bat that remains a question ... Brown dropped a routine fly in the seventh that led to the Yankees pushing their lead to 5-3 ... With runners on the corners with two outs later in the same inning Lou Montanez made a spectacular diving grab on a fly ball down the right field line.

On the Mend: Ryan Howard is back with the club, but he's in a walking boot following a surgical procedure to rid an infection near his surgically repaired Achilles tendon. He last participated in a workout on Feb. 25, but now may be sidelined for another two weeks.

"I don't know when he's going to start baseball activities," Ruben Amaro Jr. told the Inquirer's Matt Gelb. "I don't have any time frame one way or another."

On Deck: The Phillies and Yankees will return to Clearwater on Monday with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 P.M. - Joe Blanton is expected to oppose Michael Pineda. The game will be broadcast live on the MLB Network.

Phillies Pitching: Cole Hamels threw 13 of his 14 pitches for strikes, surrendering three hits and a run while notching a strikeout. Dave Bush also tossed two quality innings, allowing one run while striking out two. Jonathan Papelbon hurled a scoreless inning in his Phillies debut.

Chad Qualls surrendered three-runs on three-hits, including a two-run blast by Cole Garner. Michael Stutes gave up two runs on two hits in an inning of work.

John Mayberry Jr. finished the contest 0-for-3 and stranded four. Domonic Brown finished 0-for-2.

Good to See: Raul Ibanez was greeted with a nice applause as he was introduced for the first time as a Yankee ... he then proceeded to bloop an RBI-double down the left field line.

On Deck: The Phillies head to Tampa tomorrow to again face the Yankees at 1:05 with Roy Halladay scheduled to make the start ... Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira are all expected to be in the lineup for the Yanks after not making today's trip to Clearwater.

From the Editor: The Review's plans for covering the 2012 season

Draft of our new logo
PBR - For those that may not know, the Philadelphia Baseball Review was established in 2005 as a means to cover the sport at various levels in the Delaware Valley.

Sure, we provide daily Phillies coverage via our blog and Twitter feed, but the Philadelphia Daily News and Philadelphia Inquirer have the beat covered. It would be foolish to spend our limited resources on stories they are expected to cover.

We also don't want to regurgitate stories you can easily find somewhere else - our goal is to cover the uncovered and provide content that is unique, but relevant.

Moving forward, our Web site will be updated several times a month with feature-type stories, but the blog will house the day-to-day coverage.

Looking for comments on an upcoming series or an opinion on a managerial decision? Visit the blog. Hoping to see a feature on a high school star from Gratz? Check the Web site.

With that said, here are some of the different things we plan to do with our Phillies coverage this season:
  • Include more sabermetric analysis: Prior to every series we will provide an analytical scorecard that will compare the Phillies and their opponent in several key sabermetric categories.  We also will include some sabermetric analysis in our game recaps - which takes us to the second point ...
  • Game recaps will include a traditional write-up, but also an opinion and some advanced analysis. We also will touch on the next day's contest.
  • Morning Note columns several times a week.
  • Opinion column once a week.
We have already introduced several new pieces to our college coverage this season, including:
  • Weekend roundups
  • Big 5 poll
  • Players of the Week
  • Sabermetic leader-boards
Our goal has never changed, but to survive in a world saturated by options we have to provide content that is timely and relevant, but also unique.

My background is in journalism, so I often struggle with the validity of blogging and the concept of purposely being different. Too often bloggers fail to do their own research and interject opinion with fact - not all do this, but far too many do.

For the longest time I've tried to disassociate myself and the Review from that arena, but to make the jump to the next level it's obvious we need to expand beyond the traditional baseball reporting model.

I'll do it, but I'm bringing my journalism values and teachings with me.

Hang with us and I'm sure you will enjoy the ride.
